Buried Onions by Gary Soto
1. Eddie, who is the main character and protagonist of the book, is a mexican man who lives in Fresno. He is about 19 years old and has admitted he has done nothing in his life. He had dropped out of school and has joined gangs and lives in a bad part of town. He lives with his mom. his father and best friend had died in the story. After finding a job painting curbs, he knew he had to do something better in life. He joined the navy. Eddie sees the Navy as his way to get out of Fresno and get away from the "buried onions".
2. One of the main themes of "buried Onions" is you can't escape your past. One must learn to accept it as part of who they are and then move toward the future.
3. The tone is different at times. It can be depressing at times, when he was ing gang fights and he was talking about he had accomplished nothing in life, and at times it could be happy, when he joined the navy to start his life over.
