Final update

I haven't started my final project yet.  All I have done is talk with other peers in my collaborative working group about how we are going to create our college blogs.  We have come up with some great ideas with how we are going to create the blog.

In these next two weeks, I will need to create my college blog and connect it with my working group and their college blogs.

My project/blog will benefit me because I will get to research information about my university that I may not know yet.  It will also help others by giving them information about basic college stuff and maybe will influence upcoming seniors to look into the University of Arizona.

Final project

For my final project i will be doing my own college blog.  I will create a new blog which will have information for upcoming seniors about college stuff and college advice.  I will also have a page for information about my university which is the University of Arizona.
How do we get our blogs recognized on the internet

Thank you to Annette Sousa for recording!

MacBeth Test answers

Part 1

1. A. Slaying the traitor Macdonwald.
2. B. The Thane of Cawdor him.
3.  A. I and II only
4. A. His titles of Glamis and Cawdor.
5. A. The traitorous Thane of Cawdor.
6. B. A metaphor.
7. B. "too full of the milk of human kindness."
8.  B. II and III
9. C. has accepted the challenge to slay the king.
10:A. get the chamberlains drunk.
11.he is one of King Duncan's generals, noted for his fierce courage. In his battle against Duncan's enemies, he fights so furiously and valiantly that Duncan rewards him by making him the Thane of Cawdor. He then becomes a bloodthirsty tyrant as he sets out to gain the throne of Scotland. In the plays conclusion, the last view of Macbeth is one of courage in battle, a glimpse of his former self.
12.Macbeths ambition is aroused by the witches' prophecies, and once he becomes Thane of Cawdor, he sets out to gain the throne of Scotland.
13.Macbeth gained his power with help from the Witches and it destroyed him. They present things to Macbeth, planting the seed of ambition which is watered by his wife. He brings about his own demise, the witches were only the tools who acted as a catalyst.
14.Macbeth lets ambition corrupt him immediately upon learning that he has become the new Thane of Cawdor. The fact that one of the witches' prophecies comes true makes him hungry for the rest. Banquo, however, is very distrusting of the witches' because they are evil beings. He won't put much stock into what they have said just yet because he's concerned about the reprecussions.
15. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are very interesting in so far as they are quite ambivalent. Lady Macbeth admires her husband but also triggers his downfall. Lady Macbeth encourages her husband to slay Duncan.
This event is pivotal and needs to be stressed if we really want to understand the whole concatenation of this wonderful yet mysterious play. Lady Macbeth symbolizes evil, Macbeth symbolizes gullibility. In short the relationships between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth can be construed as a mixture of cruelty, anger and admiration.

Literature Analysis 7

Out of Africa by Isak Dinesen

1. This stroy is about a farm that the narrator had when he was in Africa. The narrator never says her name, but we know that she is Danish.  The farm was located in Ngong, which is now Kenya.  The farm which had over 6,000 acres of land, grew mainly coffee beans, the other remianing acres, were covered with trees and houses where the natives lived.  The natives were from a tribe called, Kikuyu.  In exchange for giving the chance to live on the farm, they had to work a certain number of days per year.  The narrator is very attached to the natives.  she runs her own school for the children and even most of the adults, to learn to read and write.  She also gives them medical care.  The whole story is a flashback for the narrator who is remembering the events that happend on the farm.

2. One of the main themes of the story is that it doesn't matter what race or religion you are, we are all still humans.  When the Europeans invaded most of Africa, they treated the Afircans as if they were animals not as people.

3. The tone of the story is different had times. It can be dark and depressing, when the Europeans invade, and it can be happy and relaxing, when the narrator is talking about all the good times she had with the natives and the farm.

4. The whole is book is one big flashback.  The narrator is talking about the events that occured when she was living on the farm.  There are also symbols in the story.  Lions, for example, are kings of Africa, they represent aristocracy that is found in the African forests.  Another symbol is Lulu, the antelope that the narrator adopts.  It represents the connection of the farm to the landscape that surrounds it.

3/21 lecture

1. After we discussed these conecpets in class, i have learned many other concepts. I learned that your parents hold your hand through everything as a child and if you allow them to do the same when you are 18, you will become helpless.
2. The first paragraph relates mostly to the Ap test. If you dont review what we have leanred in class, you will do poorly on the test. But, this testing does not prove a thing because not everyone is built for testing. This is not genetics it is just that not everyone can sit down and concentrate for an entire test period.
3. I think that we can use the things we learned today in class in our partner work. I learned that if two minds work together, more work can get done.

Literature analysis 5

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

Two men by the name of George (small and has sharp features) and Lennie (big and tall and mentally ill) are migrant workers who are on the road to find work.  Their main dream is to one day own a ranch of their own.  They were previously booted from their last job because Lennie was accued of rape.  The two men find work and report to the ranch. George decides to do all the talking with the boss because the fear that the boss will not accept Lennie for his mental problems.  They get the job.  They meet a couple of other workers.  Candy, who is very old and has a very old dog as well, Curley, the bosses angry son, and Curley's wife who starts to flirt with the two men.  At first the two men fit in, but are awaken with a serious problem.  Lennie, who loves to pet soft things, was accidently pulling Curley's wife's hair to hard and killed her.  The men were forced to flee the ranch once again.

One of the main themes of "Of Mice and Men" is The predatory Nature of Human Existence.  Almost all of the characters experienced profound sense of loneliness and isolation.

The tone of "Of Mice and Men" is Sentimental and tragic.  Their dream was to one day own their own and ranch, but the dream was broken after they were forced to leave another job because of Lennie's actions.

Of Mice and Men contains symbolism, imagery and allegory.  The setting is an example of symbolism.  The story begins with the two men by the river, it ends with them by the river.  This basically means that they have gotten nowhere with their lives. Also rabbits are a symbol of peace and life for Lennie, while mice symbolize death.  All of the characters at different times of the story represent broader populations.

Poem Interpretation

1. The main character is excited to go to war, but later finds out, war is cruel.  The main character is a young boy who joins the army.
2. The structure of the poem is in lines of pairs called couplets.
3. War is nothing but hatred
4. The first of each pair of lines will begin with "They said," and the second are his responses.
5. The images are descriptive. You can just see the emotional shift of the main character as the poem goes on.
6. Phil George, the author, repeats "they said", which the men tell the main character of what to do. He also has responses from the main character in each pair. For example They said, "You are no longer a lad."
I nodded.
7. The tone of the poem is tragic. A young boy is a victim to a war.
8. The author uses imagery and uses a lot of repition.
9. The structure of the poem helps the author convey his message by seperating each line into couplets with repeating words, "they said" and having an emotional change as the poem goes on.

AP Test thoughts

Overall the practice AP test we took in class was what I expected.  I expected some parts to be hard but also some parts to be easy.  I believe I did better on the essays rather than the multiple choice questions.  I thought that the multiple choic questions had questions where it seemed as if all the choices were correct. I learned that I have to study some practice AP questions and to study/review my AP terms.  By taking this AP practice exam, I believe it helped because I get a taste of what is to come for the real AP exam.

Dr. Tony Williams's Gresham College lecture on A Tale of Two Cities

  • Despite Paris and London, there was a third city, Mamchestor.
  • Concieved the idea while acting in a frozen deep.
  • Each of Dickens' novels are portraying his life in a certain way.
  • He lived in London because his father worked there. (His father later went to prison from his actions)
  • He got the overall idea of the story from his experinces of his every day life there.
  • Saw many different and unusual things in London, which resulted in him writing this story.
  • He knew everything about London and Paris.
  • He referenced London as a newspaper, everything is there, but nothing is connected.

Answers:

Great expectations first 10 pages

In the beginning of the story, pip, the main character is introduced. It starts with him in an england churchyard. We later find out that pip was an orphan who lived with his sister and her husband. This is similar to Charles dickens life because dickens had to live on his own as well. The beginning also showed how it was very tough to live in England.

Literature Analysis 4

Lord of the Flies by William Golding

In the middle of a war, a plane, which was carrying young school children from Great Britain, gets shot down and crash lands in a desereted tropical island.  Ralph and Piggy, 2 of the main characters, assemble all of the kids to create rules and elect who will be the leader of the group.  Ralph is elected leader of the group, while Jack is elected hunter of the group.  Ralph, Jack, and another boy, Simon deicded to go on an adventure to see what is around the island.  The kids deicde to create a fire to try and signal passing ships. They succeed at making fire, but it soon burns out and enflames the forest of the island. At first the young boys enjoy the island because they had no parents to boss them around, but later they find out to be the worst thing that could happen to them. Meanwhile, Jack and his hunting team could not kill anything, and later Jack becomes preoccupied with the act of hunting. A ship finally passes by but the kids forgot to maintain the fire. As the story unfolds, the kids start to go against each other. Jack and hunters wanted to kill Ralph, they burnt the whole forest, where Ralph was hiding, which caused him to run out to the beach where the kids were waiting fo him to kill him. But as Ralph ran out of the beach a British naval officer was there to rescue the young boys.

One of the main themes of Lord of the Flies is loss of innocense. Loss of innocense means that once they crashed on the island, they were all well behaved kids wanting to be rescued and get off the island. But they turn into bloodthirsty hunters who careless of being rescued and brought back to their families.

The tone of Lord of the Flies is more dark, violent and tragic. This tone started towards the end of the book where the young boys transformed into bloodthirsty ravages. They didnt care about each other, all they wanted to do was kill one another.

Lord of the flies has many symbols. The conch represents society’s rules, politics, and speech. The fire represents of both hope of rescue and of destruction. The pighunts represent the shift of emotion and power of the boys, all they wanted to do was hunt and kill.  Imagery is also used in the book. The author kept talking about the "scar" that was left from the plane. This showed that there was already destruction at the beginning of the story.  Also the water that they bathed in was "warmer then blood". This showed how everyone will become bloodthristy.

"Battle Won is Lost"

They said, "You are no longer a lad."
I nodded.
They said, "Enter the council lodge."
I sat.
They said, "Our lands are at stake."
I scowled.
They said, "We are at war."
I hated.
They said, "Prepare red war symbols."
I painted.
They said, "Count coups."
I scalped.
They said, "You'll see friends die."
I cringed.
They said, "Desperate warriors fight best."
I charged.
They said, "Some will be wounded."
I bled.
They said, "To die is glorious."
They lied.

Phil George

I like this poem because it has  a great message to it.  The title means that eventhough a battle is won, it is also lost.  When someone goes to war, you can win that war but you also lose many men.  The poem shows how a young boy is excited to go to war, but as the war continues, he finds that war is not worth it.

BIG Question Abstract

The internet has changed society in many different ways.  It has changed our thoughts, actions and even personal appearance.  There has been a recent study conducted in England telling us that kids are actually happier with their virtual lives more than their regular lives.  Kids can be whoever they want to be when they are in their virtual lives.  Nicholas Carr author of The Shallows says that the internet is changing the way we concentrate and think. He says that it is starting to sway our thinking to stupidity, changing the way we read and concentrate on our work.  Carr also says that the internet is actually rewiring our brains.  People need to research this study because we need to know if we are causing ourselves to become stupid and obese from the internet.  We need to know if there is a way to change what the internet is starting to make us as people.  The internet is causing us to become angrier more stupid and obese, we need to change this as soon as possible.
